Different parasitoid species elicit varied Argentine stem weevil, Listronotus bonariensis avoidance responses

چکیده
Importation biological control can create new host-natural enemy responses that are different from those behaviours elicited in native ranges of the agent, and/or pest. This possibility was investigated with Argentine stem weevil (Listronotus bonariensis) presence three endoparasitoid species levels affinity to New Zealand pasture. The question posed whether exhibits species-specific or generic parasitoids. first parasitoid Microctonus hyperodae which has a coevolutionary history L. bonariensis. second, aethiopoides, similar ecological and behavioural characteristics M. hyperodae. third Aphidius colemani, attacks pasture aphids is phylogenetically remote spp. Microcosms were used examine compare bonariensis when confronted by each these showed strong similar, but very much reduced exposed aethiopoides. exhibited no measured reaction A. colmani. Therefore, response rather than response. implications all parasitoids discussed terms species’ phenotypic closeness centres origin.

Is the Invasive Species Listronotus bonariensis (Kuschel) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) (Argentine Stem Weevil) a Threat to New Zealand Natural Grassland Ecosystems?
Listronotus bonariensis (Argentine stem weevil) is a stem-boring weevil that has become a major pasture pest in New Zealand, and cool climate turf grass in Australia. This species is also frequently found in native tussock grassland in New Zealand. Laboratory and field trials were established to determine the risk posed to both seedlings and established plants of three native grass species comp...
متن کاملCollagen Gels with Different Fibrillar Microarchitectures Elicit Different Cellular Responses
The extracellular matrix consists of a complex mixture of fibrillar proteins, in which the architecture and mechanical properties of the protein fibrils vary considerably in various tissues. Here, we systematically polymerized collagen gels at different temperatures, providing substrates with tunable mechanics and defined local microarchitecture. We studied the dependence of spreading dynamics,...
متن کاملCrawling and walking infants elicit different verbal responses from mothers.
We examined mothers' verbal responses to their crawling or walking infants' object sharing (i.e. bids). Fifty mothers and their 13-month-olds were observed for 1 hour at home. Infants bid from a stationary position or they bid after carrying the object to their mothers. Mothers responded with affirmations (e.g. 'thank you'), descriptions ('red box'), or action directives ('open it'). Infants' l...
متن کاملIs parasitoid acceptance of different host species dynamic?
1. Parasitoid acceptance of host individuals that differ in suitability is dynamic, varying with physiological state and experience. Female parasitoids with high egg loads and low life expectancy (i.e. time limited) are more willing to accept hosts with low suitability for progeny development than females with low egg loads and high life expectancy (i.e. egg limited). However, studies of dynami...

We examined if emotional faces elicit physiological responses similar to pictures of emotional scenes. Forty one students viewed emotional scenes (negative, neutral, and positive) and emotional faces (angry, neutral, and happy). Heart rate, orbicularis oculi and electrodermal activity were measured continuously, and the startle reflex was elicited. Although the patterns of valence and arousal r...
